Short answer
A digital loyalty card is a stamp or points card that lives in your customer's Apple Wallet or Google Wallet instead of their pocket. They join by scanning a QR code at the counter, with no app to download, and every stamp shows up on their phone on its own. With Zolu Loyalty you set it up once and your team stamps from a phone or a tablet at the register.
Paper punch cards have kept regulars coming back for decades. The idea still works: buy a few times, get something free. What doesn't work anymore is the card itself. It gets lost, left at home or thrown away, and the business never knows who its best customers are. A digital loyalty card keeps the idea and moves the card into the place your customers never leave without: their phone.
What is a digital loyalty card?
A digital loyalty card is a stamp card or points card that lives in your customer's phone, in Apple Wallet on an iPhone or Google Wallet on Android. It sits next to their boarding passes, concert tickets and payment cards, with your business name, colors and logo on it.
Every time the customer buys, your team adds a stamp. The card updates itself on the customer's phone, and when the reward is ready, the phone tells them.
There's no app to download. That matters: most people won't install an app for a café or a barbershop, but almost everyone already has a Wallet on their phone.
How it works for your customers
For the person at the counter, joining takes a few seconds:
- Scan. They point their phone's camera at the QR code on your counter and join with their email.
- Save. One tap adds the card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. If they prefer, the card also works as a web page.
- Collect. Every visit, your team scans their card and the stamp arrives on its own.
After that, the card does the reminding for you: every new stamp shows up on it, and their phone tells them when the reward is ready. If they change phones, they get their card back with the same email, with all their stamps.
How it works for your business
The business side is just as simple, and it's where a digital card really pulls ahead of paper.
- Stamp from the register. You scan the customer's card from the Zolu app on your Android phone, or your team uses a register you connect with a PIN, like an iPad on the counter. Anyone on shift can stamp without their own account.
- Keep working when the internet drops. On Android, the scanner in the Zolu app keeps working offline and syncs when the connection is back.
- Several locations. One account covers up to 10 locations, and each stamp can record which one it came from.
- See your regulars. How many customers came back in the last 30 days, how often they visit, who hasn't been back in 30, 60 or 90 days, and how many people joined and how many rewards you gave each week.
- Stamps or points. Use a classic stamp card, or points with rewards in tiers if your tickets vary a lot.
Every Zolu Loyalty account includes 2 loyalty cards and 3 registers, and you pay one price per account, not per location.
Why businesses move from paper to Wallet
- Nobody forgets it. People leave cards at home. They don't leave their phone.
- It brings people back on its own. Seeing the stamps add up on their phone, and the notice when the reward is ready, are reasons to stop by.
- You finally know your best customers. Not just how many stamps you gave, but who keeps coming back.
- Nothing to print, buy or reprint. Change the reward and every card updates.
- Harder to fake. Stamps are added by your team, not drawn with a pen.
Which businesses use a digital loyalty card?
Any business with customers who come back can use one. It works especially well for:
- Coffee shops and cafés: the classic "tenth coffee is free".
- Bakeries: a reward for the family that picks up bread every weekend.
- Barbershops and hair salons: a free cut or a treatment after a set number of visits.
- Food trucks: a way to know your regulars even when you move around the city.
- Ice cream shops, juice bars, car washes and any local business with repeat visits.
How to design a reward people chase
- Make it easy to explain. "Ten coffees, the next one is free" beats a complex points table.
- Give a first win early. A small reward on the fifth visit keeps new customers coming until the big one.
- Pick something that costs you little and means a lot. A drink, a pastry, an upgrade.
- Use points if your tickets vary. When one customer spends $4 and another $40, points can be fairer than one stamp per visit.
Switching from paper or another loyalty app
You don't have to start from zero.
- From paper: put the new QR next to the register and let your team mention it with every order for a few weeks.
- From another loyalty app: you can import your customers from a CSV file, and they claim the stamps they had at your register.
